The Ridge is a room type reached after Room 100. It is the final stretch of the game, leading to the final encounter. This area is much more dangerous and is arguably one of the hardest areas of the game as the lights are turned off and Monsters spawn more frequently.

Overview[]

The Ridge is an area after The Control Room available after taking the crystal from the stand. Once The Crystal is obtained, the lights will go out, emergency lights will turn on, and green lights will guide you to the right door, along with lights that slowly generate light then turn off, ditto. Some Monsters in The Ridge act differently and spawn more often; specifically Node Monsters who attack more frequently, and players have to rely on audio cues for attacks. Sounds emitted from most monsters will be louder in this area. There are usually 14 doors of the Ridge, confirmed due to the end screen saying that you opened 114 rooms, until you reach the end.

Strategy[]

  • Players should keep note of lockers after every door, as node monsters have increased chances of spawning. A useful strategy is to approach a locker after entering each room and waiting to either have a monster pass or for assurance that none are coming.
  • Rooms in this area are big, and there is a chance to get a room big enough to hide from a Angler or Pandemonium without using lockers. You can also use smaller rooms and hide behind furniture too.
  • Throughout The Ridge, there is a chance for rooms to have glowing audio speakers, These are played by Z-779, the music which will cause the player's PDG to detonate if they stand near one for too long. Some harmless speakers can be found, emitting no lights or sound.
  • Code Breachers become more important in The Ridge, as rooms in the area are larger and monsters become a bigger threat, which may delay players in finding the locked room's keycard.
    • Furthermore, locked rooms may also have glowing audio speakers in them, forcing players to find the keycard quickly in order to avoid PDG detonation.
  • There is a chance of Pandemonium spawning instead of Angler in the bridge. This very rare situation is a near unavoidable death, as Pandemonium clips out of a barrier and flies towards the player, killing them.
  • It might be a good idea to go as fast as possible through the Ridge in order to have to avoid the least amount of Node monsters. However, this is not advised for players who are not as experienced, as it is difficult for those who are not as familiar with room generation.

Trivia[]

  • The Ridge could be compared to that of The Greenhouse from Doors, having similar entity mechanics and featuring no present lights (except the flickering and dim lights).
  • It is possible that the speakers that have a chance to detonate the player's PDG is a reference to the Dead Money DLC for Fallout New Vegas, as a similar mechanic exists within.
  • The theme that plays as ambience in The Ridge is titled "The Part of the Game Where We Throw Everything At You".
    • This has been confirmed by Zeal to not be a reference to Chapter 9 of Portal 2, the chapter's name, sentence from both Glados and Wheatley, song name, and finally, achievement, being named "The Part Where He Kills You".
  • The song which plays over the speakers is "Ind og ud af dørene", a Danish song from the 1930's.
  • Making to the end of The Ridge in a single player run without hiding in a locker will award the player with the "We Didnt Playtest To Make Sure This Was Possible" (also known as "Certified Clown") badge.[1]
    • Another similar badge obtained is the "We Die In The Dark" badge, obtained via making to the end of The Ridge on a single player run without picking up a singular light source.
  • As of the Four Point Five update, some sections of the Endless Blacksite have the chance to be replaced by The Ridge. These can be indicated as the room will look like a Server section's entry room with some black and orange Urbanshade cargo boxes, resembling those of The Ridge.
    • This entrance to the Ridge is actually the bridge you see Angler go across in The Control Room.
  • New room types have been added for the Ridge as of the Four Point Five update, such as the large room with a waterfall to the left and a catwalk to the right, and another large room where you should walk on rocks lit up by the green beacons.
    • While traversing through those rooms, due to their large size, you should go straight to the next room fast because a Angler variant or Pandemonium could spawn in.
