The Crooked, also known as The Adversary and Corpse, is a semi-hostile entity (doing 30 damage) in The Hunted expedition, acting as the main danger seen throughout the expedition. The Crooked will follow you during your entire run, and he also appears in the Mantle Extraction expedition. He is also going to be added to the Hadal Blacksite as a Grand Encounter in future.

Appearance[]

The Crooked appears as a tall, blocky, skeletal figure, with a deformed crooked head, sharp teeth, misplaced eyes, and a needle shot at its right eye. Atop its head lies a beret with an Urbanshade logo on it. The Crooked dons a camouflage uniform with grey boots and a faded blue Urbanshade jacket. According to a death message after dying to it, it's revealed that it was the former corpse of an un-named Guardsman, the reason of their death was unknown.

One of eyes inside of The Crooked's deformed head follows the player as they move around The Crooked, however only the small eye does this while the larger, paler eye stays in place. The larger eye has a nail piercing it, likely explaining why The Crooked is half blind.

A black parasite-like object is located on the back of its head, resembling a scorpion or arachnid of some kind.

Mechanics[]

At door 38, (door 2, if counting up) The Crooked approaches through door 37, walking through the doorway. If the player looks away, The Crooked will walk quickly towards the player. If it gets too close to the player, it will punch them, and then offer a hand to help them back up. Strangely, The Crooked will not attack you if you are looking at his face, even if you approach and walk through him.

If Pipsqueak is going to pass through, The Crooked rushes to a locker to hide. This is your only indication of Pipsqueak spawning, with the exception of deaf mode.

When the player gets next to a code-locked door, The Crooked will stop following them, and instead lean on a nearby wall while the player inserts the passcode in order to give the player enough time to input the code. It resumes the chase afterwards.

The Crooked will occasionally hop through vents that are located on the ceilings and appear in random places to ambush the player, or when it gets too far away. However, he has a small chance to get stuck if there's a metal rack beneath a ceiling vent he comes out of. After entering a door's key code or travelling through another vent, he will become unstuck.

Upon collecting all the Token Fragments in the Vault Challenge, he will salute you and leave you alone.

He also helps you get up when you get damaged

Strategy[]

It’s recommended that you use a flashlight to scope out the room, and keep an eye on The Crooked. Back away from him while moving in the direction of the exit of the room. Do not look away from it for too long.

The doors won't open unless you look at them. Quickly take a glare at them and resume looking at The Crooked.

Keep a good look at what The Crooked is doing at all times. If it enters a locker, hide in a locker. Deaf mode adds visual indicators for when it walks, goes through vents, and hides in lockers. It is most recommended to keep watch on The Crooked while entering another room through the door, as when he disappears, he will travel through the vent in your room.

Using a Flash Beacon on The Crooked will cause it to cringe away for almost 1 second giving you time to open doors.

Don't worry about The Crooked attacking you if you get too close, as they are ONLY able to attack you when you aren't looking at them, at least in most instances.

In The Vault, time is of the essence, so you can exploit the delay between The Crooked hiding and Pipsqueak arriving. Since The Crooked hides early, you can use the 5-10s after he hides to grab more fragments and/or progress, but be careful that you don't stray too far from a locker lest Pipsqueak arrive earlier than you expected.

Bugs[]

  • At rare instance, The Crooked may disappear for the rest of the run. You may still hear him attempting to travel through vents.
    • This bug, seemingly, also removes Pipsqueak as well. The cause of this is unknown but can also be confirmed to happen by Ksilly.virus.jpeg who also got affected by this.
    • But in Shinyred_1126's experience, Pipsqueak still spawns, giving you some flashbacks at The Ridge.
  • There is a bug where The Crooked will follow you, even if you are looking at him. He will be on top of the player's hitbox before attacking them. The cause of this is not currently known or recorded.
  • Pipsqueak was once reported to spawn in even without The Crooked entering a locker.
  • On blue-moon occasions, when entering a key code, The Crooked's leaning animation will be levitating or glitched.
  • If you hide in a locker to avoid Rebarb while The Crooked is in the same room as you, after you leave the locker, The Crooked will immediately run towards you and attack you, even if you were looking at him.
  • Flashing the Crooked while it's in a locker will cause it to "come out" and do its flashing animation before teleporting in.
  • Sometimes The Crooked can levitate on top of rubble or other small decorations around rooms, however this doesn't do much.

Trivia[]

  • Since The Crooked hides in a locker whenever there's a Pipsqueak encounter, this implies that The Crooked is similarly vulnerable as humans.
  • The Crooked's mechanic is reminiscent of weeping angels, a common horror game mechanic when entities like statues become sentient should a player break their line of sight, but become docile once the player locks eyes on them.
  • At the end, The Crooked peeks out its arm, holding the Roblox Mega Hunt Token in its hand, giving it out to the player[1].
  • The Crooked's appearance, name, and mechanic may be inspired by the Creaking from Minecraft
    • This is false, however, as the Crooked dates back to 2023 (as evident by a WIP model of the Crooked's beret hat model and a mention in a scrapped "customizable gamemode" (similar to Doors' admin panel)), which currently pre-dates the Creaking from Minecraft.
      • Alternatively, it could also have been inspired by the "There Was a Crooked Man" nursery rhyme.
  • Nicknames for "The Crooked" include; "Bob", "Robert", "Bobby", "Bobert", and "Bipolar Bob". Due to the confusion about if he cares about you, or not.
  • The parasite on the back of The Crooked's head combined with the uniform could mean that this is an experiment, or possibly a worker that got mutated by one of the Parasites.
  • In the end of the run, The Crooked will follow you to the bridge, but when you retract the bridge, they will stop following you. Instead, they will salute you and walk away.
  • In the Mega Token version, The Hosts refers to The Crooked as Parasite, which means this could be a worker who got mutated by the Parasites.
  • It's unknown why The Crooked doesn't follow the player through the vents, as they travel through their own vents all the time that appear to be the same size.
  • The Crooked is one of the very few entities that 'help' the player in some way, others being Sebastian Solace, N.A.V.I. AI.
  • The uniform that the Crooked wears is a hint to Urbanshade's PMC's (Private Military Contractors), before the construction of the Hadal Blacksite. Urbanshade used to be a company that assisted local police forces before the discovery of The Crystal. They originally invested in arms trade and private security before Mr. Shade had other ideas in mind.
  • According to Zeal, The Crooked (along with possibly Pipsqueak and Rebarb) might get added in the main game. As The Crooked might be a special encounter or rare monster.
