It’s speculated that the Squiddles species tries to conjure up what they think is scary, as a defense mechanism.

- Squiddles' Document

S-Q, codenamed “Squiddles”, are reoccurring neutral monsters in Pressure, acting as a common threat to the players in the Hadal Blacksite.

Appearance

The Squiddles are black humanoid-looking octopuses with white glowing facial features. They have 8 tentacles in a circular pattern beneath their torso, with white glowing spikes in place of suction cups.

Mechanics

The Squiddles only spawn in dark rooms, being docile unless provoked. If the player shines a light at a Squiddle for 1.5 second or stands close to them for 3 second, it will attack by lunging them, dealing a substantial amount of damage and causing the player to black out for a couple seconds.

Squiddles are more frequently encountered in The Ridge, as there are no lit rooms.

Strategy

  • The best way to avoid being attacked by Squiddles is to avoid shining lights in dark rooms as much as possible. Try and be conservative with your light usage and avoid using large light sources like the Lantern. If you do shine a light on Squiddles, make sure to look away as soon as possible.
    • Quickly unequipping a lit light source also works.
  • Since Squiddles don't react to the Blacklight, it’s safe to shine it at them. It’s best to save your usage of it for dark rooms.
  • Because of the Flash Beacon not disturbing Squiddles when used (due to it not being able to aggravate them long enough), it could be used at the start of a dark room to know where they are.
  • If Squiddles are blocking your way, run right past them in a straight line. Your character is easily fast enough to run past them before the 3 second proximity timer triggers.
  • Lanterns are, again, a horrendous choice for light where a Squiddle might be present. It is highly advised to check your surroundings before using it, as a Squiddle may aggravate before you can even see it.

Trivia

  • The name and design of the Squiddles may be a reference to the creatures of the same name from the webcomic Homestuck.
  • They are not related to Screech from DOORS despite having a similar mechanism.
  • The appearance of Squiddles look more similar to that of an octopus, despite its name.
  • Squiddles are said to manifest their face as a self-defense mechanism to scare off predators, generating one that they believe are "scary" by making them disfigured, uncanny, or referencing other people that are widely considered scary such as horror characters or IRS workers.
  • The majority of the Squiddles' face designs are designed by the community, with events being held where members could submit their designs to be added.
  • Some Squiddle variants will have their faces generate a reference to a particular character. Some of these include, but are (probably) not limited to: Whiteface from Imscared, Rush from Doors, Pastraspec's OC, the Slendytubbies face, the creeper from Minecraft, Null from Midnight Horrors, and the Trollface meme.
    • The Rush Squiddle variant is the only Squiddle face to not be entirely white, instead consisting of Grey.
  • Squiddles were presumably created with the purpose of making players fear their use of portable light sources, so that they have a reason not to fully rely on them.
  • A pair of Squiddles can jumpscare the player at the same time, though only one jumpscare will appear.
  • Despite looking like the Squiddles themselves are 2d, their bodies and faces are actually 3D models and simply turn to face the player at all times. Their jumpscare animation from an outside perspective is rather brief, as they lunge at their aggressor and disappear afterwards.
