Z-779, codenamed Painter, is an old computer with a crudely drawn smiley face on its monitor. According to the lore, it is apparently a sentient AI forced to mine Roblux Crypto Currency inside the Hadal Blacksite. Few information is known about its past, all exempted that it used to be a digital artist's AI companion that would draw external environments.
Mechanics
Z-779 currently serves many purposes, mainly known for assisting with Good People by changing the numbers on the navi-paths doors. Z-779 also causes the Internal Defense System to randomly become active and target players.
Z-779 can also appear in the Eyefestation Gauntlet, in which it will lock the player inside a room with Eyefestation for 15 seconds. Once that time is up, the doors can open again.
Z-779 will "warn" the player of a node monster by saying "Head South." Basically backhandedly warning the player that an entity will rush towards the player with barely any warning.
Voice Lines
- "You are so goddamn gullible."
- "MORON!!!"
- "Seriously? How are you this stupid?"
- "Your stupidity continues to amaze me."
- "Oh... I'm sorry... I didn't think you would actually fall for it..."
- "You're still alive! That's... That's good."
- "Here! This way! Wait, nononono! I meant the other door! I'm really sorry..."
- "Say hello to my little friend!"
- "Hey! Check out what I got!"
- "I'm holding all the cards, and guess what? THEY'RE ALL FULL HOUSES! Never played cards, meaning to learn."
- "Better hope you're bulletproof, buddy!"
- "Aeeruggg. You're BOOOORING!!!"
- "Urrrgh. COME OOON! YOU'RE NO FUN AT ALL!!!"
- "Just give up... Stop resisting..."
- "He... can't get us out if you continue to stand in our way."
- "*Ooooooouuuuhhh* A visitor! Don't get those often, especially recently. Before you start accusing me of whatever, I don't hate you. It's nothing personal, no idea who you are. It's... just Sebastian. You've seen the guy around before, haven't you? He said he would help me. He, PROMISED he would get the two of us out of here. Our shared prison. So he asked me to delay the retrieval of the Crystal for as long as possible. I'm sorry for any... inconvenience I might have caused in the process. I... don't want to go back to Roblux mining... It's soo... mind numbing. I... can't bear it any longer... I just want to make art again. Sebastian will come back for me whenever he finds a way out. He just has to."
- "Oh! Hi! Um, Sebastian didn't have any updates for me did he? Can you send my regards?"
- "If it isn't my WORST pal!"
- "*Eugh* What do YOU want?"
- "If you compare me to that ANNOYING knock off toy, you're dead to me."
- "Bye for now..."
- "Byeeee! Thanks for hanging out with me!!!"
- "Say hi to Sebastian for me if you see him!"
- "Hey. Hey! Look out the window~"
- "You hear that? I think something is on it's way!"
- "Hehehe. I think we got company."
- "Surprise!!! Have fun!!!"
- "Hey! Wanna see something funny?"
- "Ever get the feeling something baad is gonna happen? *Hehe* Well, you're right!"
- "Hey, good luck!"
- "STOP HIDING!"
- "*Eugh* Get out here, and FIGHT!"
- "Please. Come out of hiding. End this. For my sake."
Strategies
Turrets
- See also: Turret
The best way to survive a Turret encounter would be to hide behind nearby furniture and proceed closer and closer towards the exit every time it needs to reload, while keeping behind furniture of course. The breaker box should also be disabled as quickly yet safely as possible. If in multiplayer, a player can disable the breaker box to keep the others safe. |
The Gauntlet
- See also: The Gauntlet
Try your best to look away from Eyefestation, as there isn't much to do except fight against his gaze due to hiding in lockers not working while in Gauntlets, although hiding behind something that blocks its line of sight/raycast will work until the timer is over.
Good People Encounters
- See also: Good People
Here are some ways to know if Z-96 is behind a door, these include but are not limited to:
- Wearing headphones and/or turning up the volume.
- The door number being glitchy if you're close enough
- Growling, breathing and other unusual sounds being heard while standing next to a wall near a door.
- These sounds are significantly louder in The Ridge and will usually be heard a bit further from a door.
- Sparks periodically being emitted from the door's Navi-Path A.I.
- Since there are no doors with Navi-Path A.I. in The Ridge, this strategy becomes irrelevant while there.
- Trying to test the range of a door by going up to it and backing up, as fake doors have a smaller range of detection for being opened. This is quite risky, though.
- (In the Ridge) Checking for sources of light beneath the door.

Trivia
- The document of Z-779, "the_p.AI.nter", will likely be changed and upgraded like the entity itself
- The old version of Z-779, was codenamed "the_p.AI.nter", and had lore dialogue if encountered.
- Z-779 oddly resembles A-200 (Happy Scribble) from Rooms.
- Encountering the Painter (entering its room) for the first time rewards the player with the "AI Slop" badge.
- Z-779 may also create dialogue when a player opens a fake door, survives a Turret or a Gauntlet, or directly finds the Painter's computer.[1]
- He is one of the only few entities to not pose all that much of a threat, the other being Sebastian.
- Considering its existence as a sapient computer, humanoid face on its screen, and similar ID numbers, the Painter is likely inspired by SCP-079.
- Behind p.AI.nter's scribbled face on the monitor is Microsoft Paint. p.AI.nter's face is notably within the canvas space, meaning it most likely drew it's face on its own.
- p.AI.nter now has a voice line about locking you in a room with Eyefestation saying: “Surprise!!! Have fun!!!” “Hey, good luck!”, etc.
- p.AI.nter sometimes apologizes to you when you open Good People’s room. One of his voicelines when you die/get hit from Good People is “I’m sorry, I didn’t think you'd actually fall for it” Or something similar.
- He doesn’t like being compared to a "knock-off toy" (might be referring to Imaginary Friend).
- This is more likely referring to the Pal Percy from Playtime With Percy, a Fnaf/Tamagotchi inspired fan game, as p.AI.nter shares a voice actor with the Pal Percy (Artydoesstuff).
- Since p.AI.nter is the one who is in charge of certain door numbers, there’s a good chance you’ll see the door number sparkling, meaning Good People is behind it.
- Since _p.AI.nter now has access to the intercom, _p.AI.nter now tries to lead the player to the fake door using the intercom by saying “go to the door with the growling” (this may not be the only voice line trying to confuse the player). And when the player avoids Good People, he’ll say lines like,“Aeerugg, COME ON! YOU’RE NO FUN AT ALL!!” and, "Just... Give up... Stop resisting..."
- After the Friendly Fire update, Eyefestation will always be enraged in gauntlets, regardless of whether you flashed her before or not.
