Green smoke... Now where have I seen that before?

Z-283-Chainsmoker, is a hostile node monster in the Hadal Blacksite.
Appearance[]
Chainsmoker resembles a distorted green blobfish with empty eye sockets and green smoke coming out of its mouth. Chainsmoker is constantly enveloped in green smoke, obscuring everything aside from its face. Chainsmoker uses a billboard decal for its face, resulting in it always looking directly at the player, even viewed from multiple angles at once.
Mechanics[]
Chainsmoker has a chance to spawn if the player’s current or previous room has a valid hiding spot. The lights will flicker briefly, and Chainsmoker will begin slowly advancing from behind while emitting a loud sound that generally has a chain-like sound. After a short while, Chainsmoker will move slowly through the room. Players who hide in time or escape Chainsmoker line of sight before it passes through will be safe.
Notes[]
- Chainsmoker can(not?) spawn in The Control Room.
- Chainsmoker and other Angler variants besides Angler itself cannot currently attack from the front.
- After a player spends a set amount of time in a room, there is a chance for Chainsmoker or any other node monster to spawn. This is called a timer spawn.
- If the room is L-shaped or another room with a corner, and the road is not very long, you can squat on the corner and get close to the last door. It is also a good idea to have an obstacle next to you. If a player hides in this way, Chainsmoker won't attack them.
- If the player happens to die next to a locker, there is a chance they will respawn inside said locker, but all loot they have collected will be found on the floor as if they had been killed, while eerie chanting plays in the background. They will die soon after enough time passes.
- Chainsmoker's gas induces cleithrephobia, causing players to exit their lockers more quickly, and is the same gas from Paranoia’s Box.
The Ridge[]
Chainsmoker and other Angler variants will spawn more frequently in The Ridge, and the lights will not flicker to signal their arrival. Players have to rely on muscle memory and hearing for the entity's audio cues.
Strategy[]
- Chainsmoker moves a lot slower compared to the other angler variants, and its green smoke makes hiding more difficult. Players need to time their hiding to the very last second or hide in a locker farther away from the path of Chainsmoker if they want to live. Be sure to not hide too early, or you will be forced to exit out of your hiding spot due to cleithrophobia.
- You can also avoid Chainsmoker by hiding outside of its line of sight in places like separate rooms and inside vents.
- A good strategy for Angler and its variants is to wait next to a locker and hide when your screen starts shaking, or when the sounds emitted by Chainsmoker becomes loud.
- Chainsmoker uses Raycasting to create his line of sight, so hiding places that cover your character completely (such as office cubicles) or hiding places that are far enough away (separate hallways) also work to protect you.
- If Chainsmoker passes by, wait a moment or two before getting out of the locker. Otherwise, Chainsmoker may still kill you due to its slow speed.
- If you get in a locker early and your camera immediately starts to drift as a warning sign of cleithrophobia, that's a sure sign that Chainsmoker is coming. If you get back out immediately, there's still time to wait for the right moment before he comes.
- In The Ridge, the predominance of timer spawns allows for a strategy to exploit Chainsmoker's slow speed. Once he passes by, immediately start running behind him through the next several doors. This will force more rooms to generate, keeping Chainsmoker alive for as long as possible and preventing other node monsters from spawning.
- This is an especially useful strategy for lockerless runs.

Trivia[]
- Chainsmoker is a blocking word for Roblox, which means that if you enter this word in the chat box, it will be blocked by the system as "###########".
- For this reason, in multiplayer games where communication is necessary and the word "Chainsmoker" may be used, it is recommended to use pre prepared abbreviations instead. For example, the most common abbreviation for this monster is "Chain". You can also say "Chains" to make it easier to understand.
- The reason the word "Chainsmoker" is blocked is because of the word "Smoke" or "Smoker".
- Chainsmoker is one of four variants of Angler, sharing the same basic mechanics, with the other three being Pinkie, Froger and Blitz.
- After a player successfully survives Chainsmoker, they can get out of their locker and follow Chainsmoker until it despawns. This tip is really useful in dark rooms.
- It is alluded that the Chainsmoker‘s smoke consists of the same substances (Sulphur Dioxide/SO2) that is inside both the Paranoia’s Box and the Green Torch that points the right way underwater but more concentrated and stronger.
- Before a patch update, Chainsmoker and Blitz had the same jumpscare, Angler’s, instead of their own.
- Chainsmoker is said to be Male.[1]
- If encountered right before the control room, you can find Chainsmoker traveling across the bridge where Angler would normally be. This is because when an entity spawns in 97-100, they go to the nonfunctional door which leads over there. This can also happen with Pandemonium and potentially other angler variants.
- The name "Chainsmoker" is in reference to a person who takes an unhealthy amount of smoking daily. (About 1 ton or 500 cigarettes, although any amount of smoking is unhealthy.) This is fitting due to the smoke Chainsmoker leaves behind wherever it goes.
- Surviving Chainsmoker for the first time will reward the player with the "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" badge, as well as the "Chainsmoker" Jumpsuit.
- Due to the name Chainsmoker being affiliated with cigarettes (as mentioned above), it is tagged by ROBLOX moderation. In effect, Chainsmoker is referred to as "the one who trails smoke" and "the green one" in it's affiliated badge.
- Originally, Chainsmoker was also going to have green smoke emitting from his eyes.
- This was eventually scrapped because SearingCircuits thought it looked "dumb".
- Chainsmoker can make a player's cleithrophobia activate earlier for the sole purpose of tricking them into hiding early.
- If you reverse Chainsmoker’s messages when he teleports you into his wasteland, you can hear some English words that are somewhat hard to understand.
- Notably, Chainsmoker has a kill radius slightly larger than an angler's, so make sure you wait long enough before exiting a locker.
- If the lights flicker and you are far enough into the game, you can go in a locker and listen for any heart beats as soon as you enter it. If that happens, it is a sign that Chainsmoker is coming for you.
- Chainsmoker and Blitz are the rarest node monsters.
- If doing lockerless, when Chainsmoker passes, you can follow him for a few more doors to prevent other node monsters from spawning, as when a node monster is attacking, the node timer doesn't reset, meaning when Chainsmoker attacks, his slow speed prevents the timer from reseting.
- Chainsmoker is a blob fish. Blob fish look ugly when outside the water, hence the reason for why Chainsmoker looks ugly.
